18.05.20 Wonder: Choose Kind

Wonder by RJ Palacio is a popular book - you may have it on your shelf or be able to borrow from a friend, or the local library online. If you can't get hold of a copy, you can read the opening chapter of the book here:

A film of the book was released in 2017. You can watch the trailer here - it will give you an idea of what to expect in the story:

What does the word "ordinary" mean? Why do you think Auggie says he wants to be ordinary?

Why does the word "unique" mean? Why does Auggie's mother call him unique?

Which is to better to be: ordinary or unique?

How would you describe Auggie to someone who had never met him? What words do you think it is OK to use? Are there any that aren't OK? How can you tell the difference?

Auggie's teacher has a monthly precept - a wise rule you can use to help you behave in a positive way. Have a look at this list of them. Which is your favourite? Can you explain to your friends what it means to you, and how you think you could achieve it?

Here are several activities you can try to get you thinking about kindness:

Why not try making a kindness jar? Every time you do something kind, you put a marble or a button in the jar to keep you on track. Like most things in life, the more often you do it, the easier it gets!
