Computing
At Clifford Community School, our Computing curriculum is designed to equip pupils with the knowledge, skills and confidence to use technology safely, creatively and purposefully. We want children to become responsible digital citizens, skilled problem-solvers and confident users of technology in an ever-changing world.
Our curriculum follows the 2014 National Curriculum for England and is carefully sequenced so that pupils build their understanding over time through three key strands:
Computer Science
Pupils learn how technology works and how to use computational thinking to solve problems. This includes:
- understanding algorithms
- creating and debugging programs
- learning about sequencing, selection and repetition
- developing resilience and logical thinking through coding and robotics
Information Technology
Pupils learn how to use digital devices and software to create, store, organise and present information. This includes:
- using digital tools effectively
- creating digital art, writing and media
- using search tools, spreadsheets and databases as they progress
- applying their skills in practical, meaningful contexts
Digital Literacy
Pupils learn how to use technology safely, respectfully and responsibly. This includes:
- online safety and privacy
- understanding digital footprints and online identity
- recognising misinformation and online risks
- learning how to communicate appropriately and respectfully online
How we implement Computing at Clifford Community School
Computing is taught through a carefully planned and progressive curriculum from EYFS to Year 6. We ensure that pupils revisit key knowledge and skills regularly, allowing them to deepen their understanding and apply learning in new contexts.
Our approach includes:
- discrete Computing lessons across the year
- opportunities to develop skills through continuous provision in EYFS
- use of a range of devices and resources, including Chromebooks, Bee-Bots, Indi Cars and LEGO Spike
- links to other curriculum areas where appropriate
- a strong focus on online safety and responsible use of technology throughout the school
- practical, hands-on learning that encourages children to be curious, creative and independent
In EYFS, children begin by exploring technology in meaningful ways and developing early digital skills through play. As pupils move through the school, they build confidence in programming, digital creation, communication and safe online behaviour. By the end of Year 6, pupils are well prepared to use technology thoughtfully and effectively in secondary school and beyond.
Our aims
Through our Computing curriculum, we aim for all pupils to:
- develop secure computational thinking skills
- become competent and confident users of technology
- understand how to stay safe online
- use technology creatively and responsibly
- be prepared for the digital world they live in
