British Values

British Values at Clifford Road Primary School

At Clifford Road Primary School, we actively promote the fundamental British Values as part of our broad and balanced curriculum and as part of the day to day routines we establish. These values are embedded in our ethos and are promoted through our PSHE and RE lessons, classroom discussions, and day-to-day interactions with all stakeholders.

The five key British Values are:

Democracy

Pupils are encouraged to express their views and make choices, they are always listened to by adults and are taught to listen carefully and respect the right of every individual to have their opinions and voices heard. We promote democratic values through activities such as our School Council, class votes and participation in pupil surveys. We teach children how they can influence decision making through democratic processes.

The Rule of Law

The importance of laws whether they are those that govern the class, the school or the country, are consistently reinforced. Each class discusses and sets its own rules that are clearly understood by all and seen to be necessary to ensure that every class member is able to learn in a safe and ordered environment. We teach the value and reason behind laws, that they govern and protect us, the responsibilities that this involves and the consequences when laws are broken. Our behaviour expectations reinforce this, and we work with local services such as the police and fire service to bring this learning to life.

Individual Liberty

Children are taught to make safe and informed choices, while understanding their rights and personal freedoms. As a school we educate and provide boundaries for young pupils to make choices safely, through the provision of a safe environment and empowering education. We promote this through online safety education, learning about personal responsibility, and providing a safe and supportive environment to explore their interests and talents. Whether it be through choice of challenge, of how they record, of participation in our numerous extra-curricular clubs and opportunities, pupils are given the freedom to make choices.

Mutual Respect

Part of our school ethos and behaviour policy are based around Community values such as “respect” and these values determine how we live as a community at Clifford Road Primary School. These values are highly visible around the school and can be seen in every classroom. Our pupils live by the values and are keen to identify them in one another. They understand what they mean and can demonstrate these fully. The pupils know and understand what is expected and that it is imperative that respect is shown to everyone, whatever differences we may have and to everything, however big or small. Everyone in our school community is to treat each other with kindness and consideration.

Tolerance of those with Different Faiths and Beliefs

We are proud of our diverse school community and actively promote understanding and appreciation of different cultures, religions and beliefs through our curriculum and everyday school life. This is achieved through enhancing pupils understanding of their place in a culturally diverse society and by giving them opportunities to experience such diversity.

Another way we celebrate this is through our Language of the Month initiative, where we explore and celebrate the different languages spoken by our pupils and families. Children have the opportunity to learn key words and phrases, as well as explore the customs, traditions, food and other facts from the countries where the language is spoken. This helps our pupils to develop a deeper appreciation of different cultures and encourages an inclusive and respectful school environment.
