Early Birds Story Club

Early Birds is a club for children from Year 6. We enjoy breakfast and books together from 8AM each morning, including a delicious bowl of Poetry Pops! Scroll down to see our Early Birds summoning poem which we use to summon a story every day and to find out what we read last year. If you can find one of the Early Birds they will show you the actions.

This club is voluntary so every session you attend and book you read can count as extra credits for your reading challenge! Interested in joining? Speak to Ruth or Lisa, or ask the office to send you an invitation.

We are currently The Lion above the Door by Onjali Q Ruaf. It is quite a funny story about two children called Leo and Sangeeta and their school project but we have also identified some very serious messages about the impact of racism and bullying.

In the Autumn term we read Alice in Wonderland by Lewis Carroll and have borrowed some of the costumes from last year's Year 6 production to help us get in role. Of course, we've had a Mad Hatter's Tea Party too! We also performed the "Jabberwocky" poem with dramatic effects.

I Opened a Book

By Julia Donaldson

I opened a book and in I strode
Now nobody can find me.
I’ve left my chair, my house, my road,
My town and my world behind me.

I’m wearing the cloak, I’ve slipped on the ring,
I’ve swallowed the magic potion.
I’ve fought with a dragon, dined with a king
And dived in a bottomless ocean.

I opened a book and made some friends.
I shared their tears and laughter
And followed their road with its bumps and bends
To the happily ever after.

I finished my book and out I came.
The cloak can no longer hide me.
My chair and my house are just the same,
But I have a book inside me.
