The Early Bird Story Club: information for year 6 children

Ruth and Lisa invite you to start the day with a well-balanced diet of reading goodies – we’ll start with a quick bowl of “Poetry Pops” to whet your appetite, followed by a Full English chapter or two from one of our delicious stories.  We’re planning a range of genres so there’s bound to be something you find irresistible, whether you like to roll around laughing at ridiculous family antics or hide behind a cushion at the spine-tingling scary bits.  First up will be “The Day the Screens Went Blank”, a brand new story from comedian Danny Wallace. Can you imagine it? No phones, no TV, no tablets? We can’t, so we thought it sounded like a great idea for a book and we’re looking forward to finding out what happened together.

To nourish our bodies, everyone enjoys a good breakfast;

to nourish our minds, everyone enjoys a good book.

Who is it for?

Anyone in year 6 can sign up. Just ask your parent/carer to fill in the form on Parentmail.

Do you have to like reading or be good at it?

No! You can love reading or not, it doesn’t matter. If your teacher has asked you to read more at home, but you find this hard or don’t want to, this would be brilliant for you. Equally, if you love reading or just like the sound of the club, you are welcome to join us.

What will we do?

You will be given a delicious breakfast and a choice of drink. (This is provided by our school kitchen, so if you have special dietary requirements, don’t worry as we will cater for you.) You will settle down to eat and listen to a story aimed at your age range. When school starts, you will go to class.

Will it be fun?

Yes! We want you to enjoy the stories whilst eating a delicious breakfast - or second breakfast ;-)

Who will be running it?

Ruth Crossley and Lisa Beresford, our school librarians, will be reading to you. Julie will be helping out with the breakfast.

How will this help my reading?

Even when people are reading to you, the part of your brain that deals with new words and picturing what is happening in the story is hard at work.

Will I have to read?

No – the idea is that you listen to stories.

When will it be?

It will run every day, starting Monday 13th September.

What time is it and where will it be?

It will run in the school library and will start at 8am (doors will open at 7.55am), and will end at 8.30am. Enter through the Year 2 doors on the corner of Woodville Road and Clifford Road.

Can I just come when I like?

We would like you to come every day so that you hear the full story. There will be a register.

How much will it cost?

We will only be charging £2 a week, but this is an optional payment (if money is tight, you don’t need to pay to come). If you are currently receiving free school meals, it will be free. We are using a government catch-up grant to pay for most of the costs.
