Year 3 Spring Term

This term we will be covering the following units:

Multiplication and Division

In this unit we will:

  • recognise and calculate with multiples of ten
  • make links between multiplication and division
  • reason about multiplication
  • multiply 2 digit numbers by 1 digit numbers with and without exchange
  • divide 2 digit numbers by 1 digit numbers
  • use remainders
  • solve problems involving multiplication and division

 

Length and Perimeter 

In this unit we will:

  • measure in metres, centimetres and millimetres
  • find equivalent lengths in different units of measure (mm, cm and m)
  • compare lengths
  • add and subtract lengths
  • measure and calculate perimeters of shapes and real life objects
  • solve problems involving length

 

Fractions (1)

In this unit we will:

  • recognise and understand denominators of unit fractions
  • compare and order unit fractions
  • understand the numerator of non-unit fractions
  • compare and order non-unit fractions
  • recognise and understand the whole
  • count and find divisions on a numberline
  • find equivalent fractions

 

Mass

In this unit we will:

  • use scales
  • measure mass in kilograms and grams
  • find equivalent masses
  • compare masses
  • add and subtract mass
  • solve problems involving mass

 

Capacity

In this unit we will:

  • measure volume and capacity in litres and millilitres
  • find equivalent volume and capacities
  • compare volume and capacities
  • add and subtract capacity
  • solve problems involving capacity

Year 3 AutumnTerm

This term we will be covering the following units:

Place Value 

In this unit we will:

  • recognise the place value of each digit in a three-digit number (hundreds, tens, ones)
  • identify, represent and estimate numbers using different representations
  • compare and order numbers up to 100
  • count from 0 in multiples of 4, 8, 50 and 100; find 10 or 100 more or less than a given number
  • read and write numbers up to 1000 in numerals and in words
  • solve number problems and practical problems involving these ideas

Addition and Subtraction 

In this unit we will:

  • add and subtract a three-digit number and hundreds, tens and ones
  • add and subtract numbers with up to three digits, using formal written methods 
  • solve missing number problems
  • estimate the answer to a calculation and use inverse operations to check answers
  • solve problems, including missing number problems, using number facts, place value, and more complex addition and subtraction

Multiplication and Division

In this unit we will:

  • write and calculate mathematical statements for multiplication and division (2,5 and 10x tables)
  • recall and use multiplication and division facts for the 3, 4 and 8 multiplication tables
  • solve problems, including missing number problems, involving multiplication and division
  • write and calculate mathematical statements for multiplication and division using the multiplication tables that they know, including for two-digit numbers times one-digit numbers, using mental and progressing to formal written methods
  • solve problems involving addition, subtraction, multiplication and division and a combination of these, including understanding the meaning of the equals sign

 

Year 3 Summer Term

This term we will be covering the following units:

Fractions (1)

In this unit we will:

  • Make a whole with unit and non-unit fractions
  • Explore tenths as fractions
  • Understand fractions as numbers
  • Calculate fractions of a set of objects

Fractions (2)

In this unit we will:

  • Find equivalent fractions
  • Compare fractions
  • Add and subtract fractions
  • Solve word problems about fractions and finding fractions of an amount

Time

In this unit we will:

  • Learn about hours, days, months and years
  • Estimate times
  • Tell the time to the nearest minute
  • Calculate start and end times
  • Solve time problems

Angles and Properties of Shape

In this unit we will:

  • Learn about turns
  • Learn about what a right angle is
  • Understand and draw parallel and perpendicular lines
  • Identify and draw vertical and horizontal lines
  • Recognise and describe right angles and parallel and perpendicular lines in 2D shapes
  • Recognise, describe and construct 3D shapes

Mass

In this unit we will:

  • Measure mass in kilograms and grams
  • Work out different intervals on a scale
  • Add, subtract and compare masses
  • Solve problems involving mass

Capacity

In this unit we will:

  • Measure capacity in litres and millilitres
  • Convert between litres and millilitres
  • Compare and order capacities
  • Add and Subtract capacities
  • Solve problems involving capacities
